The attachment of importance to being the world’s richest man by either Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos is arguably an unnecessary rivalry.
Elon Musk, the founder, and Chief Executive Officer of the electric car manufacturer, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) now has bragging rights as the world’s richest man, and he is flaunting it to Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN). According to the update on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Elon Musk’s networth is now pegged at $224 billion and is miles apart from Jeff Bezos’s $189 billion. In the year-to-date period, Musk has added as much as $54 billion while Bezos has lost approximately $1.64 billion within that time frame.
While not new to being tagged as the world’s richest man, Elon Musk notably wants his arch-rival, Bezos to be aware of the new ranking by responding to the latter’s tweet with a silver medal that has number 2 written on it.

Those who understand were quick to note the troll and it sparks about of debate for which many started highlighting the innovative inventions both were working on. Undoubtedly, the two billionaires have made their mark in building some of the world’s largest technology firms today. On Elon Musk’s part, his electric company is the biggest EV maker in the world by market capitalization, while his privately held Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SpaceX) controls the most sophisticated spacecraft around in a bid to revolutionize commercial space travel.
Amazon has also been a success story, growing from a simple bookstore to being the world’s largest e-commerce company in the world. Jeff Bezos is also powering innovation in various industries including space tourism via his Blue Origin company, cloud services through the Amazon Web Service, and a host of others. The company’s deep roots have placed it as the fourth-largest company in the United States with a $1.644 trillion market capitalization. Tesla is ranked 6th with a valuation of $793.34 billion according to data from Companiesmarketcap.
Elon as the Richest Man: Unnecessary Rivalry
The attachment of importance to being the world’s richest man by either Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos is arguably an unnecessary rivalry. The wealth accumulation by each of these billionaires can shift in anyone’s favor as controlled by factors that may be far beyond the direct control of either of them.
The billionaire’s index is often reshuffled and while the metrics being employed in the ranking are comprehensive enough, there are other factors that may be used to determine whose wealth is going for the greater good of mankind.
For the duo of Musk and Bezos, the majority of their inventions are still in the works, and with advances in both company’s space travel companies, as well as other growth startups they are powering, we can expect more tussle in the near future. While Elon Musk can take solace in the fact that he’s currently ahead of Bezos in the richest man ranking by about $35 billion, the Amazon boss can find peace in knowing that his company is bigger than Tesla, if any bragging rights are to be considered.
